Name that Tree

This very big, very beautiful tree is in my yard. I have no idea what it is. It gets tons of hard little green balls that fall all over the place. Anyone have any idea what kind of tree this is?

Black walnut. If you crack the green balls black ink will get all over the place. My dad has a whole bunch in his yard. They are worth a lot of money. A lumber guy offered him $5000 a piece for his and my dad refused. He said he liked the trees more than money. Ain't he the coolest?
There is a special way to crack the shells to get the nuts out. Not sure how. My grandpa gathers up baskets of them in my parents yard and drives over them, but there has to be an easier way.

Great picture, BTW. I love the perspective. You are talented with the camera. :)

Squirels eat the green balls right in front of my front door and make a mess, I've never seen any ink though. But yeah, the skeletons of what is left from those green balls do look like walnuts!

Can I eat them???

Thanks Shai, you totally rock!

Yes you can eat them. I can't because I am allergic, but you can. :)
I don't know how squirrels openthem without getting ink all over, but they do. Maybe if you crush them when they are ripe or something they will make less of a mess.

Here's a link I found about black walnuts. "Husking" them, as they call it, sounds like a pain in the ass! http://www.extension.umn.edu/projects/yardandgarden/ygbriefs/h404blkwal.html

You keep coming back, don't you woods? ;)
You should create a blog with your photos on it. That would be cool.
