Banned For Discussing The Word Islam

Islam means submission. DUH!

On Atrios there is a thread that is about some guy who called Atrios biased.

I've just been banned from Atrios again, while on that thread posting along with Atrios, although he didn't have the balls to speak to me from his biased little mouth.

Here is the conversation:

You must admit this site is biased. Especially in this haloscan, I've been called a cunt, never once responded in kind and all this because of my opinions. Opinions do not deserve the hate I've been shown here as I've never been hateful to anyone here.I agree with the guy who said it's like Weekend with Bernie here.

This is about the definition of the word deen, what about the meaning of the word Islam?Islam in the Arabic language and in Qur’an means total submission and obedience. Allah (S.W.T.) says in surat Al-Imran, (Verse 83), what can be translated as, "Do they seek a deen other than the deen of Allah and to Him all what is in the skies and in the earth have submitted willingly or forcefully and to Him they shall return" http://www.islam1.org/khutub/Def...een_&_Islam.htm

To be completely accurate, it means both. "Islam" and "salaam" (peace) come from the same Semitic root. "Islam" translates as submission, to make peace, to surrender, since we're meant to submit/surrender to God (Allah). Remember that we use the anglicized pronunciation; spoken by a native speaker of Arabic, the words sound very similar.

Islam does not mean peace, salaam means peace, you can try to spin it how you like, but Islam means

    SUBMISSION to God.

    Idiot. God you're fucking stupid.

    Can you make peace forcefully????

Well, maybe Muslims could spin peace to mean killing for Allah, but that's a different thing....although, if you want to make that the definition of Islam, submitting to the will of Allah by killing the unbeliever so that there can be forced peace through obedience, I'm with ya.

You know, atheist and theist have the same root, therefore they mean the same thing.

That did seem a bit vehement. :) It's okay; we all have bad days once in a while.

Regarding the word Islam, though - sometimes a word can have several definitions, and sometimes several words can have the same definition. For instance, the word faith, which we usually take to mean "loyalty to God," also means "allegiance to a person," "something believed with strong convictions," and even "firm belief in something for which there is no proof." If I insisted that the first definition was the only correct one, I'd be mistaken.

Your definition of Islam as "submission" is correct but not complete. It specifically means submission to God, and as I said, the root indicates peaceful submission and obedience. From that same root comes salaam, which means peace, and As-Salaam, "The Peace," which is a name for God given in the Quraan.

The reason that "theist" and "atheist" don't mean the same thing, despite having the same base, is that the prefix a- means "not." Obviously, "believer in God" and "not-believer in God" don't mean the same thing. But Islam is related to salaam in the same way that Christianity is related to Christlike; they have similar roots and similar meanings.

Besides, I don't think that peacefully submitting to God is a bad thing. Isn't that what we're expected to do as Christians?

  • At 6/1/06 2:48 PM, Blogger AnnieAngelsaid…

You are missing the point of this thread, that discussion was not allowed and I was told I was lying. Then I was banned. It's not really about Islam the religion and whether or not submission is a good thing.

If you look at the definiton given by the Islamic site I posted, peace is not in it. How can you have forced peace? Many words have common roots, and Islam was spread by the sword, not by peace.

To add in peace to the definition even as you say by vague and root terms takes away from the real meaning, that you MUST submit to God and be obidient. And you means everyone. Peace in submission is fine once you're Muslim and all, but if I don't want to be one, there's no peace in submission and no compulsion in religion so I'd be dead in Muhammed's day.

Submission or death. I suppose there's peace in death. ;)

The words Christ and cream also have the same root, does that mean we can say that Christ is a dairy product?

  • At 6/1/06 3:10 PM, Blogger ACGsaid…

You know, Shoelimpy, I really don't understand that response. I was trying to have a reasonable, intelligent discussion about the etymology of a word there, and Annie and I were actually exchanging views like reasonable, intelligent human beings, and then you had to throw in some ridiculous, sarcastic comment that didn't contribute to the discussion at all.

I don't think it's right for someone to ban you from commenting if you haven't done anything wrong. If you're willing to listen to what other people say, take it into consideration, and respond thoughtfully, that only makes a discussion better. But if all you're doing is discarding everyone else's views without consideration, and all you're contributing is sarcasm and hostility, maybe you don't need to be there.

Who are you talking to? Me or shoe?

Shoe wasn't involved in the discussion at Atrios.

And he hasn't said anything I would consider even remotely ban worthy here...he's right on the cream thing, btw.

  • At 6/1/06 3:43 PM, Blogger Shoelimpy™said…

It wasn't sarcastic, it wasn't anything worth being banned for. I am just saying that not all words with common origins mean the same things. I thought it was a logical point in what seemed to be a logical discussion until your illogic started to shine forth.

  • At 6/1/06 4:22 PM, Blogger ACGsaid…

That comment was directed at Shoelimpy, who might not have been banned from that particular thread, but he's certainly complained about being banned from other threads, and it's happened for exactly the reasons I gave.

I never said that all words with common origins mean the same thing. I never even said that all words with common origins have related definitions. But a little bit of research into the etymology of the word Islam shows that "Islam" and "peace" not only have similar origins, but they have related meanings as well. It's not like relating "Christ" and "cream," it's like relating "Christ" and "Christian." And only someone acting purposely obtuse would imply that I was making a connection based solely on word root.

If you'd followed my link, you would have seen the relationship laid out clearly and explained by people who know what they're talking about. But you chose instead to make an obtuse comment that, like I said, contributed nothing to the discussion.

I'm not trying to be mean here or insult anyone. But I do have some advice: when someone tells you something that you disagree with, check and see if maybe they're right. You dismissed out of hand the idea that Islam and salaam could be related, because Christ and cream aren't related. But if you'd done the research, you'd have learned that you were mistaken, and Islam and salaam are, in fact, related and do, in fact, have similar meanings.

I appreciate this discussion coming up in the first place, because before, I didn't know the meaning of the word, and as I did research on the subject for this discussion, I learned things. I was willing to accept that I might be wrong, and because of that, I learned new things. Always be open to new things, and never be convinced that you're absolutely right. Because the fact is, we're rarely more than mostly right anyway.

  • At 6/1/06 4:27 PM, Blogger Shoelimpy™said…

Islam means submission. A muslim is one who submits. ASK A MUSLIM, they will tell you the meaning of their words.

Peace and submission are not synonyms in any language. The idea is almost Orwellian: Submission is Peace

You cannot go around and say that Islam means Peace as an argument that Islam is a peaceful religion when ISLAM DOES NOT MEAN PEACE. Regardless of any CONNOTATIONS (Different from definitions here) that you might want to add to the word (incorrectly I would add), it does not change the actual meaning of the word which is submission.

See what you're doing is attacking Shoe. He didn't attack you at all. What you're doing is just nasty and has nothing to do with this topic. Therefore it's trolling, which is a ban worthy offense.

Now if you want to discuss Shoelimpy, go to his board and his threads, don't do it here.

You think you have more right to post what you choose on MY blog than my boyfriend?? Nope. Think again.

Keep up the trolling and personal attacks and I'll delete you. That's the thing with people like you, you want to ban people you don't like but you act way worse than the person you want banned. I mean just look at the comments for example, to me from the posters at Atrios.

They are the ones being disruptive and flaming, not me.

Like you are here to Shoe.

  • At 6/1/06 5:21 PM, Blogger ACGsaid…

You have an interesting definition of "troll." A troll is a person who comes to someone else's blog for the sole purpose of causing trouble. I came here out of curiosity, found this thread, and thought I had something to contribute. Then you posted a comment, and we were having a discussion. Disagreeing with you isn't trolling; it's having a difference of opinion.

And for the record, I didn't attack Shoelimpy, either. I disagreed with his approach to the discussion, but that wasn't a personal attack; it was a disagreement with his approach. Without mentioning his personal qualities at all, I gave his perfectly viable suggestions that might help him in future discussions. If you equate disagreement with flaming, you have an interesting definition of "flaming."

There's no need to ban me, unless someone having a different opinion from you really bothers you that much. If that's the case, if you can't have a discussion with someone who might disagree with you, if you automatically dismiss disagreement as trolling or flaming, I probably won't be back anyway.

  • At 6/1/06 5:23 PM, Blogger Shoelimpy™said…

Shoelimpy feels like he was attacked.

    :(

  • At 6/1/06 5:48 PM, Blogger AnnieAngelsaid…

I had no intention of banning you, I was pointing out your hypocrisy. I will delete further personal attacks, like you made against Shoe.

You don't have to come here soley for the purpose of trolling to be a troll, you were trolling for a fight with Shoe. Don't get all upset about it, but stop telling my posters how to act. He made a simple comment and you started ragging on him and shit. Quit it.
